ELKONINA MARIA

Born in 1935, Moscow. Graduated from Art Faculty of Moscow Polygraphy Institute in 1959. 

She is one of the most famous contemporary artists from Russia, who participates in numerous shows since 1955. Among international exhibitions are shows in France (Basmadjian Gallery, Gallery D'essai, George Pompidou Center, etc.), US (Georgetown University, etc.), Italy, Germany, Holland, as well as Sotheby's auction. Her works are in the Russian State Museum; Ludwig Museum and Shtukman museum, Germany; Budena Collection, France, and in many private collections in France, US, Italy, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and Spain.

Maria Elkonina is using wood instead of canvas. "It provides more emotional tension in my work". From critic's review: "...Limiting her palette to earth tones of brown and black and using wooden boxes and other objects, she explored the active relationship between plane and space."
